This page defines the meaning of Element type "operating system".

An Element type of "operating system" prescribes the use of a particular operating system for the realization of an infrastructure function. The Element could describe:

  • a very particular version (e.g. "Windows XP Professional SP3 English"),
  • a very broad range of operating systems ("GNU/Linux")
  • or anything in between.

It is imperative to provide sufficient motivation to justify prescription of an (instance, kind or class of) operating system. Generally, the more restrictive the operating system is prescribed, the more numerous and detailed motives are required to justify its prescription.
