This page defines the meaning of Element type "software".

An Element type of software prescribes the use of a particular piece of software, be it

  • a software library or routine (e.g. the "Blowfish" encryption algorithm)
  • a standalone utility or tool (e.g. the GNU gzip utility)
  • a program or application, either stand-alone (e.g. OpenOffice.org Writer) or dependant on an application platform (e.g. some Java application)
  • a software suite, consisting of multiple programs, daemons, services et cetera (e.g. IBM Tivoli Access Manager for eBusiness). Note, however, that such a suite usually fulfils one or more infrastructure functions, and thus will more often appear as (part of) a Product Blueprint.
