The Reduction function reduces information in size by any appropriate means. This can mean to compress data (either lossless or lossy), de-duplicate digital items, remove redundancy et cetera. At another place and/or time, this function may be invoked again to restore the information in its original form or an equivalent form. Data reduction generally is a means to increase capacity, and can be used for data both in transit and in situ. Thus, instances of this functionality can be found in storage facilities, connection facilities et cetera.

Description

This Generic Function belongs to Working Area Middleware. The Reduction function reduces information by any appropriate means, so as to reduce in size its representation in digital form. This can mean to sample analogue data, to compress digital data (either lossless or lossy), de-duplicate digital items, remove redundancy et cetera. At another place and/or time, this function may be invoked again to restore the information in its original form or an equivalent form. Data reduction generally is a means to increase capacity, and can be used for data both in transit and in situ. Thus, instances of this functionality can be found in storage facilities, connection facilities et cetera.
