The Load Balancing functionality (intelligently) accepts data en route, and intelligently directs it to travel to one of several destinations. In this way, timely arrival of the data at a suitable destination can be ensured.

This function can be used to increase a resources availability, scalability or both.

An important part of this function is the criterion that the function uses to choose the destination of a piece of data. Data can be distributed according to algorithms that
* are entirely evaluated within the function, such as "round robin",
* make use of information within, or accompanying the piece of data,
* involve information or control signals from another system or an authorized person,
* make use of status information from the possible destinations, such as availability or local load.
