This page defines the meaning of Element type "protocol".

An Element type of "protocol" prescribes the use of a particular protocol for communication, data transfer, cryptography or other infrastructural activity. The described protocol must unambiguously map to a set of standard rules, ideally sufficiently detailed so that multiple interoperable infrastructure facilities could be developed.

Note that a protocol is a special version of a standard.
