It's possible to declare an Element to be mandatory, optional, or forbidden; the first dictates how the facility is going to be realized, the second only advises, and the third kind of Element can be used to phase out the implementation of certain guidelines, technologies etcetera.

Element

An Element is a guideline that is used to influence the way (part of) an infrastructure facility will be realized. Thus, Elements can be associated with both [:Category:Pattern Variant|Pattern Variants]] and Building Blocks).
