Description

This Building Block Type belongs to Working Area Network (NW). A Tunnel Endpoint facility serves as a bridgehead that terminates virtual circuits. These circuits are established to bridge networks or network clouds (e.g. the Internet) that differ in levels of trust and/or use incompatible networking protocols. Examples of these connections are:

  • an IPSec encrypted tunnel between corporate sites over the Internet
  • an IPv4 tunnel between IPv4 networking areas over an IPv6 network

Two opposite Tunnel Endpoint facilities can be used to create site-to-site virtual circuits. One Tunnel Endpoint can be used to terminate circuits that are set up by tunnel client applications.
