This facility can add intelligence to the handling of loosely structured data by the basic storage/retrieval functions of Raw Retention. Loosely structured data in this context means "documents", "files" et cetera (but not "databases" which are strictly structured data). In contrast to Retention Engine, it usually offers its services directly or indirectly to users.

Examples of File Engine functions are:
* Quota on file storage space;
* Access Control Lists (containing more than basic read/write/modify/delete rights);
* data synchronization;
* versioning;
* automatic archiving (requiring access to an Archiving facility);
* data migration.
