A Data Scanning service scans through data (either regular data or streams) searching for certain characteristics. Upon finding said characteristics, one or more actions are taken. The actions resulting from the scanning may directly alter the data (e.g. a spell checker), enrich the data set as a whole (e.g. an indexing service), reduce the data (e.g. an antivirus product) or create data elsewhere (e.g. a search engine crawler).

Note that data scanning has some overlap with other services, most notably message filtering, traffic filtering and monitoring services. The decision to place a service under this Building Block Type or another Type is essentially a modelling choice.
