Upon finding said characteristics, one or more actions are taken. The actions resulting from the scanning may directly alter the data (e.g. a spell checker), enrich the data set as a whole (e.g. an indexing service), reduce the data (e.g. an antivirus product) or create data elsewhere (e.g. a search engine crawler).<br /> <br /> Note that data scanning has some overlap with other services, most notably message filtering, traffic filtering and monitoring services.
