===Introduction===
The OIAm dimension "Environment" signifies a subdivision of infrastructure utilities that appear in a single "logical location". The purpose of this dimension is the grouping of external influences and/or the resulting demands and quality requirements that operate in a specific business context. In practice, one sees that "logical location" for a large part corresponds with actual physical location.

Environments are the most important expression of the uniqueness of an organization on its infrastructure. They form a high-level representation of the specific, often unique, business requirements that act upon the infrastructure facilities. 

Not all Working Areas appear under a single Environment. Facilities appearing in a certain Environment are not managed with all available sorts of infrastructure expertise; or maybe facilities of a particular kind are subject to different influences, demands or requirements. Thus it's conceivable to have an Environment named ''Data Centre'', grouping all characteristics and quality requirements that concern facilities housed in the organization's data centre. But this Environment likely lacks facilities from the Client Realm Working Area. Also, storage facilities in the data center may have different quality attributes from the other facilities, giving rise to the Environment ''Data Centre - Storage''. Thus it makes sense to indicate in which Working Areas a particular Environment "[[Property:Exists_in|exists]]".
