December 11, 2014, a workgroup convened in Culemborg to improve the OIAm modelling practice. Thirteen architects from the Netherlands and one from Belgium had discussions, both plenary and in two groups, on a range of topics. The two main topics were:
* a guide with modelling conventions as drafted by the province of Zuid-Holland, and
* content of the OIAr (OIAm repository) and the cut-over from the current version to the newly developed one.
The differences in interest, need and expertise have meant that a number of smaller work parties have formed to tackle different topics. The result of these work parties can be expected to become available over the course of next year, beginning with the new OIAr per January 1st.

Learning about the theory of functional modelling is one thing, applying it in practice is something else entirely. That is why the sponsors of the OIAm community event are organizing a masterclass modelling for infrastructure architects, to be held at Equens in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in the morning prior to the OIAm community event.
In this masterclass, participants will get a brief recap of the main OIAm theory with respect to the actual functional modelling, after which participants will work in small groups on a practical case. Here an architecture will be drafted, which will give the participants hands-on experience in the modelling of infrastructure based on functionality, instead of products and constructions. Capacity of the Masterclass is only 40 people, and participation is free.

The main page for Functional Modelling masterclasses can be found at this page; here you'll also find the information on the location and the way to sign up.

In this masterclass, the main OIAm theory with respect to the actual functional modelling will briefly be repeated, after which participants will work in small groups on a practical case. Here an architecture will be drafted as an ArchiMate model (in the free modelling tool Archi), and as descriptions in text (in templates in MS Word or LibreOffice Writer). This will give the participants hands-on experience in the modelling of infrastructure based on functionality, instead of products and constructions. The modelling sessions are guided by a number of experienced architects that have practical experience in functional modelling. The morning will be concluded with a short, plenary analysis of the case and the diverse results from the groups.
For those that are curious about the experiences of colleague architects: you are free to also sign up for the afternoon program, the OIAm community event (announced separately).
You are required to bring a laptop. You can make use of your favourite (ArchiMate) modelling tool and word processor, if you have any. The organizers also offer materials and limited support for the free and open source software tools Archi and LibreOffice.
Applying most of the feedback from the last event, we've somewhat adapted the format of the event, so as to make it practical: less presentations, more interaction. This means that, while there are still some informative presentations from organizations using OIAm (such as our host Equens), the main two parts of the event will be:
* a set of fishbowl discussions, some of which have a given topic (such as workspace architecture, and infrastructure chain architecture), and some are free-form. Each fishbowl has a flip-over or whiteboard, and will be hosted by an architect experienced in the topic. You are free to move in and out of the discussion, and from one fishbowl to another. After an hour of engaging talks, we'll have a half-hour plenary discussion on the conclusions of each fishbowl by a panel of the discussion hosts.
* an extended networking-and-drinks segment, where you're encouraged to engage in discussion with your fellows over a drink, and perhaps make use of one of the flip-overs or whiteboards.

This event is open to everyone who is connected directly to infrastructure architecture: primarily active community members and infrastructure architects who've just started using OIAm, but also everyone with a stake or interest in infrastructure architecture. If you have no experience with or knowledge of OIAM, then you may have an interest in following the functional modelling masterclass in the morning of the same day (announced separately).

__TOC__

Address
This time, the OIAm community event is hosted in Utrecht at the headquarters of Equens, Europe's largest payment processor. The location, Eendrachtlaan 315, can easily be reached by car (free parking in the Equens parking garage) or public transport (train to Utrecht, then a short ride by tram or bus to Kanaleneiland-Zuid). For Equens' own route description, click here.

Program
The day is planned to run from 13:00 to 17:30. The program looks like this:
13:00-13:10	Opening by the day chair – Erik Severijnen (Equens)
13:10-13:30	Equens and architecture – Erik Severijnen
13:30-14:30	Presentation: to be announced
14:30-15:30	Fishbowl discussions: to be announced
15:30-16:00	Plenary discussion of the conclusions of the fishbowls - panel of moderators
16:00-16:15	Day closing – Erik Severijnen
16:15-17:30	Networking, free discussion and drinks

Sign-up
Participation is free of charge, but the capacity of the day is limited to 100 participants. You may sign up by sending an e-mail to: [mailto:community@infra-repository.org community@infra-repository.org].

Application hosting provides a set of facilities to accommodate (business) application services. Accommodation entails
* the runtime environment that the applications can use
* a means to expose or publish the application services' results using web protocols
* the connectivity that consumers of the application's services require for access
* and optionally, extra functionality to service the application services.
Authentication/authorization is optionally included in the pattern type, but should preferably be performed using the pattern Access Security, as most necessary security functions are located in this pattern.

The intended agenda for the day currently looks like this:
13:30||Walk-in with coffee, tea and cookies in the HvA cantine
* Marco van Weerden, infrastructure architect at the HvA, will discuss the infrastructure architecture service bureau that has been created within the HVA, the architecture products and services that this bureau provides, and the the experiences that were gained by embedding the architecture function in the HvA organization in this manner
* Daniël Jumelet, managing consultant at BiZZdesign, will present the current state of the development of OIAm

We are still looking for interesting topics that can be presented and possibly discussed in the plenary session. If you have such a topic, feel free to post it in the Open Infrastructure Architecture LinkedIn group. The topic could be presented at the meeting either by yourself, or by an OIAm board member.

If you're interested in attending, please register by sending an e-mail to [mailto:community@infra-repository.org community@infra-repository.org], with your name and organization (multiple attendees can be registered with a single e-mail).
}}
The fifth community meeting (the first under the banner of OIAm) is to be held Tuesday July 2nd. Host of this meeting will be the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool van Amsterdam, HvA). The meeting will take place at the HvA location Kroonjuweel.

The intended agenda for the day currently looks like this:
13:30||Walk-in with coffee, tea and cookies in the HvA cantine
17:30||Meeting closes

In the plenary session, we'll hear several speakers:

}}
As mentioned in the news item of February 14th, the OIAr as a knowledge base requires updating to reflect the current state of the art. The updates impact not only the content, but also most of the structure of the OIAr. This has lead to the decision to create a whole new version of the OIAr. This new version will focus on the following improvements:
* improved navigation for different types of users, such as OIAm users, contributors, stakeholders, people who are interested to learn about OIAm;
* updated community content
* OIAm theory and assumptions, well structured and easily navigated
* example content, if possible with annotations by the organization where the content was created.

As the development takes place in the open, you can come see for yourself how the improvements are coming along. You are welcome to visit infra-repository.org/oiar-dev

A Pattern is a set of Building Blocks that form an infrastructure Product/Solution. A Pattern describes the architecture of a solution, being technology and organization agnostic. One ore more Pattern Types serve as archetypes for the modelling of a Pattern Variant, that outlines a solution at implementation level. It houses the general description of the intended functionality of the Pattern Variants based upon it. The full set of Pattern Types form the universal and basic structure of all Infrastructure Landscapes.
One ore more Generic Patterns serve as archetypes for the modelling of a Applied Pattern, that outlines a solution at the Functional Design level. It houses the general description of the intended functionality of the Applied Patterns based upon it. The full set of Generic Patterns form the universal and basic structure of all Infrastructure Landscapes. A clickable map of the Generic Patterns that together form the archetype of the Infrastructure Landscape is depicted below:
